An au pair will need their own private, lockable bedroom. The room should be at least 8 square meters, with natural light and adjustable temperature. It should be furnished with a bed, bedding, a desk, and sufficient storage for clothing and belongings. As part of the program, accommodation is free of charge for the au pair.
-
Ensure that the au pair has access to regular meals and snacks, with the understanding that they may also prepare their own meals or occasionally dine out.
Whenever possible, the au pair should be included in family meals.
As part of the au pair program, meals are free of charge.
Families are notified of any dietary requirements at the application stage.
-
Amount: The weekly allowance for an au pair is typically €70-€150 for their personal expenses.
Payment Schedule: The allowance should be paid on the same day each week.
Contract Details: The exact amount and payment schedule will be outlined in the contract.
-
Upon arrival in the country, the host family is responsible for collecting the au pair from the airport, train, or bus station, or covering the cost.
If the au pair is qualified to drive a family car, they must be added to the family’s insurance policy.
If the au pair will not be driving, the host family is asked to cover the costs of local transportation, such as a monthly transit pass or other suitable options.
-
If an au pair is required or interested in taking local language lessons, they will need designated time off to attend these classes, typically once or twice per week. The specifics of this arrangement will be agreed upon in advance and detailed in the contract.
-
Most countries allow au pairs to work up to 30 hours per week. It is important this limit is not exceeded. Your family and au pair can agree on a set work schedule or allow for flexibility.
-
Au pairs are entitled to at least one full day off each week, as well as one full weekend off per month.
Host Families are required to provide their au pair with 2 weeks of paid vacation per 12 month period, pro rata.
If families wish to include their au pair in vacation plans, both parties must discuss and agree in advance on work hours, responsibilities, and vacation time, if applicable.
-
Host families are required to help their au pair become familiar and comfortable with their new surroundings. This includes introducing them to local shops, transit, attractions, and landmarks, offering recommendations for their days off, and inviting them to some family outings and activities.
