What are the duties of an au pair?

Au pairs typically provide up to 30 hours of engaging childcare each week, supporting the host family’s daily routine. Typical duties include getting children ready for the day, tidying common areas, unloading the dishwasher, and managing children’s laundry. They also contribute to cultural exchange by sharing their culture, assisting with language learning, and bonding with the family during meals and activities.

What qualifications or experience do I need to become an au pair?

While formal childcare training isn’t typically required, prior experience working with children—such as babysitting, tutoring, coaching, or assisting at a children’s camp or daycare—is highly valued. Enthusiasm, responsibility, and a genuine passion for working with children are essential qualities for success as an au pair.

How are au pairs compensated?

Au pairs receive free accommodation in a private room, meals, and weekly pocket money, typically ranging from €70 to €150. Transportation, such as a monthly transit pass or access to a family car, may also be provided, depending on the arrangement with the host family.

Is there time off to travel?

Au pairs typically have two days off each week to explore the local area, attend events, or connect with other au pairs. They can take trips to nearby cities or further explore during annual leave, when it works with the family’s schedule, or at the start or end of their contract.

What age groups will I care for?

This varies depending on the host family’s needs, but most placements involve children aged 2–12. Your preferences and experience will be considered during the matching process.

How long does the matching process take?

The timeline depends on your availability, the needs of families at that time, your experience, visa progress, and preferences. To ensure the best experience, we recommend being flexible and providing as much notice as possible regarding your desired travel date.

How long are au pair placements?

Most families seek au pairs for 6–12 months, allowing for meaningful cultural exchange and consistent childcare. A 12-month placement is often preferred for these reasons and gives au pairs maximum value of their visa stay.

Can I choose what town or city I go to?

We prioritize matching au pairs with families based on compatibility in values, lifestyles, and availability rather than location preferences. However, all placements are in desirable locations with access to public transit to enhance your experience.

Do I need to speak the local language?

Host families in Europe often want their children to learn English from you, and most parents speak fluent or conversational English themselves. While not required, learning the basics of the local language before and during your stay is highly encouraged. It will enrich your experience and help you connect more deeply with your host family and community. We will help you get started with an online language program before your departure.

Do I need to know how to drive?

While not required for all placements, many host families prefer au pairs who can drive, especially in suburban or rural areas with limited public transportation. If driving is part of your role, you’ll need a valid license, an international driving permit (easily acquired online), and to be listed on the family's insurance.

What happens if I get sick or injured?

Travel insurance is mandatory for your adventure, ensuring coverage for medical expenses and unexpected travel costs during your stay. We’re happy to recommend trusted policies for you to consider.

Can I bring my pet, spouse, child, or significant other with me?

Au pair placements are designed for individuals only, meaning pets and significant others cannot accompany you. This helps maintain the host family’s dynamic and ensures a clear focus on your responsibilities. Additionally, most visas require applicants to be unmarried and without children to qualify.

Will I need to apply for a visa?

For stays exceeding 90 days, you will likely need a visa for your destination country. While you are responsibe for the application, we will set you on the right track.

What happens if issues arise with my host family.

Our program is dedicated to strong communication and compatibility to minimize conflicts. With a detailed contract outlining expectations and weekly check-ins between au pairs and host families, most concerns can be addressed early. If issues persist, our team is available to mediate and help find solutions.

What costs should plan for?

In addition to our program fee, you should budget for flights, travel insurance, and visa processing fees. You’ll also want to make sure you have sufficient savings for travel and adventures, but also for unexpected situations or your return home.

Will I have a curfew or house rules?

As a member of the host family, there will likely be a few reasonable house rules. We’ll ensure they are discussed during the matching process and outlined in the agreement. Open communication helps ensure mutual understanding and respect.

Will I have time to myself as an au pair?

Yes! Just as families value their privacy, we understand that au pairs need personal time too. Your schedule, including working hours, family time, and private time, will be clearly discussed in advance and outlined in your agreement to ensure mutual understanding.

How will I be able to meet other au pairs?

Many au pairs connect through local social groups, language classes, or events. We also provide guidance on joining online groups and communities to help you meet other au pairs in your area.
